SMS Messages
What ElasticPay sends by SMS
Section titled “What ElasticPay sends by SMS”ElasticPay sends two kinds of SMS:
- A payment link, when you choose SMS as the delivery method on the payment link form, or click Resend SMS on the link. The message names your business, gives the amount, and links to the payment page.
- Your automation rules’ SMS: reminders before a payment, and failure notices. A customer gets them only with a mobile number and Send SMS reminders? or Send SMS failure notices? on. See Automation Rules and Notification preferences.
Opting out: reply STOP
Section titled “Opting out: reply STOP”Every SMS ends with “Reply STOP to opt out”. When a customer replies STOP:
- they get a confirmation SMS;
- they get no further SMS from ElasticPay, from any business that uses ElasticPay, not only yours, because every business sends from the same ElasticPay number.
A customer who replies START gets SMS again. You can’t remove an opt-out yourself: withdrawing consent is the customer’s decision. If a customer asks us in writing, contact support@elasticpay.co.
Other replies aren’t read. The customer gets an SMS asking them to contact you directly.
When a number has opted out
Section titled “When a number has opted out”The payment link form refuses SMS delivery to an opted-out number, with “This number has opted out of SMS. Send by email or share the link.” Resend SMS refuses it the same way. Send the link by email, or copy it from the payment link page and share it yourself.
The customer’s page shows the opt-out in Preferences:
| Shown | Meaning |
|---|---|
| SMS: opted out (replied STOP, date) | The customer replied STOP. |
| SMS: opted out (blocked by carrier opt-out) | The customer had already opted out of our number when a message was sent, so it was blocked. |
| SMS: opted out (by ElasticPay) | ElasticPay recorded the opt-out. |
SMS status
Section titled “SMS status”The payment link page shows the status of the link’s most recent SMS:
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Queued | Waiting to go to the SMS provider. |
| Sending | Being handed to the SMS provider. A message that stays here wasn’t confirmed sent: check with the customer, and resend if it didn’t arrive. |
| Not confirmed (error code) | The SMS provider didn’t confirm it took the message (a timeout or an error on its side). It may still arrive, and the status updates if it does. If the customer doesn’t get it, resend. |
| Sent | Handed to the carrier. Most messages move to Delivered within a minute. |
| Delivered | The carrier confirmed delivery to the phone. |
| Not delivered (error code) | The message didn’t arrive. The code is the SMS provider’s error code; 30007 means the carrier filtered it. Send the link another way, or contact support@elasticpay.co if it keeps happening. |
| Not sent: opted out | The number has opted out, so nothing was sent. |
| Not sent: sandbox | Sandbox accounts never send SMS. |
Last delivered on the link is set when an SMS is queued, so it tells you when you last sent it, not when it arrived. Use the SMS status for that.
No SMS in test mode
Section titled “No SMS in test mode”A sandbox account never sends SMS, to anyone. A payment link created with SMS delivery is created as usual, and its SMS status reads “Not sent: sandbox”. See Emails in test mode.
